This month's FTI guest blogger is Dr. Emily Neil Skinner from Teacher Education.
Attending the Faculty Technology Institute 2012: Teaching the Tech Generation last summer was reminiscent of going to the Cooper River Bridge Pre-Race Expo. Or seeing Cirque de Soleil. Like the race expo, there was so much to see and try on- only the (free) merchandise was tech tools instead of running gear. Similar to Cirque de Soleil, the tech tools presented a lot of eye candy….
I was instantly engaged. But, a little overwhelmed. I needed to focus. I could relate to the tech generation students whose technology practices and identities were the focus of the institute. So much technology. Best ios emulator for windows. So little time. What to focus my attention on? I remembered the advice of my mentor when I was a 6th grade ELA teacher in Michigan and we attended the National Council of Teachers of English Annual Conference together: Just pick a couple of things to take away and implement immediately
So, I strategically approached the institute with this advice in mind. Pick a couple of ideas to take away from the smorgasbord of technologies and tools presented and start using them before I forget them. Which of the seemingly multiplying apps would be most useful to me tomorrow and also on a day-to-day basis?
The Momentum Planner Digital Pack is our planner pack for creatives, entrepreneurs, and change-makers. It's time to start using planners designed to match how you work – download your digital PDF planner today. Perhaps, on the MAC version, it would be great to have the 'two page view' instead of having to scroll down and only see one page at the time. Finally, if there could be an option to have an 'infinity page' like OneNote, it would make this APP the best one for notetaking. Eiabw, 2019-08-01 Horizontal scrolling & bookmarks! You can drag selected pages from one document's thumbnail view to another document's thumbnail view to paste them there. To select multiple pages, use the drag & drop gesture for multi-select or the 'Select' button in the upper right in GoodNotes. Once you've selected multiple pages, just tap and hold the screen, which will stack all selected. Discover the note-taking app loved by students, digital planners, notetakers all over the world. See why GoodNotes is the Editors' Choice on the App Store.
I currently serve as a co-editor of the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy (with Margaret Hagood, TEDU). We collectively adjudicate 250+ peer-reviewed manuscripts a year, and keeping track of our manuscript tracking is almost as challenging as reading and responding to the manuscripts themselves. However, with the professional development offered at the 2012 Faculty Technology Institute last summer, ongoing assistance and insights from our super-savvy tech liaison, Mendi Benigni, and our wicked smart and efficient administrative assistant, Meg Manuel, we have set up a system that utilizes multiple tech tools to help organize, share and collaboratively respond to hundreds of manuscripts and related documents.
Ubuntu latest lts. For this blog entry, I will zoom in on my use of GoodNotes, an app that I was introduced to at the FTI.GoodNotes allows users to download pdfs, annotate the documents, organize docs in files and share your notes with others. I started with the free app, but once I had hit my two 'notebook' limit for saving documents, I shelled out the $4.99 so I could save an unlimited amount of notebooks (pdf's). Users can save multiple documents within one notebook if, for instance, needing to respond to students' work, all assignments could go in the same notebook and users may have two notebooks available at all times (users can delete a notebook at any time).
Since I prefer to save each manuscript separately, the upgraded app was a no-brainer. The free app has all of the capabilities of the $4.99 app as far as annotation.
Basically, from start to finish, this is how it goes with GoodNotes:
- When users touch on the pdf on the iPad from downloading context, an 'Open in Goodnotes' option is given.
- Users are then given an option to start a new notebook, or if a notebook is already open, the pdf can be opened at the bottom of that notebook.
- Users can either write with a stylus, fingertip, or in a text box. Text boxes can be stretched to fit any size/shape and moved around on the pdf.
- Users can also highlight text as part of reading or highlight comments to ensure they are easy to find when returning to the document later. I always highlight my comments so that I can locate them later when drafting decision letters.
- Users can view pdfs a single page at a time or flip to the navigation tool where all the pages can be seen at one time (along with highlights and comments). Like all iPad apps, users can zoom in as much as desired. GoodNotes saves instantaneously so writing is never lost before it has been saved.
- PDFs can be exported (either a page or the whole notebook) with or without notes with collaborators via email, iTunes, Dropbox or other external apps on the iPad. Printing wirelessly is easy.
- Filing documents is user-friendly-through selecting 'edit' and then exporting, moving, duplicating or deleting files.
In short, GoodNotes is user-friendly and time-efficient. If you decide to try it out, I'm confident you'll have a GoodTime with GoodNotes! GoodLuck!
If you have an Etsy account, after your purchase you'll see a 'View your digital files now' Windows and mac. link which goes to the Downloads page. Here, you can download all the files associated with your order.
If you checked out as a guest, you'll find a link to download your purchase in the receipt email that was sent to you after checkout.
To access your digital file(s) after, go to You > Reviews & Purchases and look for the DashPlanner order. To the right of the order, click Download Files. This goes to the Downloads page for all the files attached to your order.
* At this time files cannot be downloaded from the Etsy app, only web browsers like Safari or Chrome.
Once you have your file open in a browser window and you have tapped the Share icon:
SAVING TO CAMERA ROLL
1. Tap Save Image to save the file to your Photos/Camera Roll.
SAVING TO ICLOUD
1. Tap Save to Files.
2. This will open the file explorer on your iPad.
Tap iCloud Drive and then select the folder where you would like to save the file.
SAVING TO DROPBOX
1. If you have Dropbox installed on your iPad, tap Save to Files.
2. Tap Dropbox and then select the folder where you would like to save the file.
SAVING TO IPAD VIA AIRDROP
If you are accessing your files from a desktop and would like to send them to an iPad or iPhone:
1. Make sure your Bluetooth is on and Airdrop receiving is on as well.
2. In the Share menu, tap your device's circle icon and the file will be sent to your Photos on that device.
The Files app is the file explorer and hub for all the files on your iPad. Here are some tricks I use within the app to make my workflow as efficient as possible.
CREATING A 'FAVORITES' FOLDER
To keep things organized, I have a folder on my Dropbox (my file service of choice) that is called 'Dash Planner Downloads'. This is one centralized location where I keep all my digital planners, stickers, and notebooks. This makes it so much easier to download and access digital products no matter what app or device I am using. Plus that means I don't have to constantly dig through the file structure to find what I'm looking for.
You can favorite this 'catch-all' folder in the Files app which will bookmark it to the left sidebar for quick and easy access. To favorite a folder in the Files app:
1. Locate the folder you wish to favorite in the Files app.

2. Tap and hold on the folder until the option bar pops up.
3. Tap Favorite. The folder will now appear in the left sidebar under Favorites.
SLIDE OVER & SPLIT VIEW FOR FILES
I am a big fan of utilizing the Slide Over and Split Multitasking tools on the iPad, especially when using the stickers from the Files app with GoodNotes. The Slide Over tool allows you to open the Files app and access your stickers in a new window, so you can view GoodNotes and your digital stickers and the same time. To use this feature:
1. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access the Dock.
2. Tap and drag the Files app icon out of the Dock. This will activate the Multitasking mode.
3. Drag the icon and release it:
– in the middle of the screen to create a floating window on top of your current screen.
– at the left or right edge of the screen to create a side-by-side window with your current screen.
To make things easy, I recommend you have open your file in GoodNotes as well as a floating or side-by-side window with the Files app open as described above. This makes it easy to simply locate your stickers and pop them over to GoodNotes, all in one screen. This can be done in one of two ways:
USING THE DRAG METHOD
This method works best with individual jpeg and png files.
1. With both your GoodNotes and Files windows open, locate and open the sticker of your choice.
2. Tap and hold the image, and drag it over to your GoodNotes document.
COPY & PASTE METHOD https://teikablite1988.mystrikingly.com/blog/mobile-application-size-photoshop.
Some files are tricky. If it's not allowing you drag the image over:
1. Open the sticker image and tap the Share icon. Keynote vs powerpoint 2017.
2. Tap Copy. In your GoodNotes document, tap and hold anywhere, and select Paste.
CROPPING GROUPED STICKER SHEETS
Goodnotes View Two Pages At Once Upon
To make importing and seeing all your stickers easier, I include a grouped sticker sheet with Dash Planner digital stickers. This sheet allows you to access all the stickers in pack in one file. Simply import the sticker sheet to GoodNotes and crop out the sticker of your choice.
Once you have imported the sticker sheet using one of the methods above:
1. Tap and hold on the sticker sheet until the options bar pops up.
2. Tap Edit to enter editing mode.
3. Tap the sticker sheet again and select Crop. The Crop Tool window will pop up. Adjust the box around the sticker of your choice using either the rectangle or freehand selection tool.
4. Once your sticker is selected within the blue or green tool line, tap Done. You sticker is now cropped from the sheet and can be edited as needed.
EDITING STICKERS
Once you have imported the sticker:
1. Tap and hold on the sticker until the options bar pops up.
2. Tap Edit to enter editing mode. You'll see the sticker has been selected and now has Resizing and Rotating handles.
3. Use the Resizing and Rotating handles to edit the sticker as needed.
